The Polis Center is looking for an experienced GIS analyst to join our team to produce data and research used with our government, nonprofits, and academic partners for community sustainability and resilience.

The Polis Center is an applied research center in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering on the IU Indianapolis campus. Polis makes data actionable for improving community health, equity, and resilience. We build and use information technology and geographically precise data across a variety of domains and sectors to identify and address our community’s most pressing challenges. We are a convener and connector, collaborating with community and academic partners to translate data and research into action. We build capacity in nonprofits, community-based organizations, government, and researchers to use these resources effectively for community good.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Supports flood mapping, risk assessment, and impact studies for natural and other disasters with a major focus on crisis informatics initiatives.
  • Supports the integration of geospatial data to support statewide initiatives.
  • Contributes to data development, transformation, analysis, visualization, and reporting for Polis projects using ArcGIS and other software tools.
  • Develops and transforms data by using software tools and other data to better support project objectives.
  • Assists in updating and maintaining complex GIS datasets.
  • Communicates regularly with internal and external project partners to exchange data, resolve questions and share information.
  • Conducts complex data analysis using ArcGIS and other software tools for a variety of research projects.
  • Creates charts, graphs, maps, and/or reports of the analytical results.
  • Implements quality control procedures for all interim and deliverable products.
  • Assists with software and project training.
  • Documents project processes and results.
  • Present both internally to the team and externally to stakeholders.

General Responsibilities

  • Conducts complex GIS data analysis; designs and develops various data modeling (charts, graphs, maps) and/or data analysis reports; implements quality control procedures for all deliverables.
  • Develops, maintains, updates, and monitors complex GIS datasets and databases; ensures data integrity and data quality control.
  • Performs complex data review, conversion, and transformation to support GIS research and projects.
  • Responds to requests for GIS information; designs and creates complex custom reports, maps and other electronic information using GIS systems; communicates regularly with internal and external stakeholders to exchange data, resolve questions, and share information as needed.
  • Ensures proper documentation related to GIS data as applicable.
  • May provide GIS software and other related training as requested/applicable.

Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. 

 

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in geographic information systems, geology, information/data science, or related scientific field.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree geographic information science, geography, urban planning, environmental studies or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of research data management and analysis or related experience using GIS applications and software.

Preferred

  • Experience in flood mapping and/or related modeling efforts.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.

  • Demonstrated understanding of Esri ArcGIS software, database management and queries, and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated understanding of flood mapping.
  • Familiarity with specialized analytical and modeling software that expand understanding about natural disasters, flooding, and resiliency, such as production of FEMA digital FIRM products, FEMA Hazus-MH, HECRAS, CDMS, etc.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Occasional travel to in-state meetings may be required.
